52 Weeks of Collage, Week 3

Week 3:  Wood

Week 3 already!!!  Thank you for visiting and hanging with me through the learning curves.  This week's prompt is wood.  I confess this one required a lot of mental gymnastics!  First, the word wood.  When I think wood I think of TREES!  Big majestic reaching for the skies, standing tall through rain, thunder, wind, sleet, snow, and sunshine TREES.  There are NO trees in the magazines that I selected for these 52 weeks of collage.  First, how is that even possible?!?!  How is it that I selected five (5) magazines that don't have trees?  I can't even tell you how many times I searched through them, thinking I was just missing them!  I was willing to compromise and settle for a majestic bush.  No majestic bush.  What about a withering bush...surely in FIVE magazines there is a withering bush!  Nope. Nope. Nope.  Psst that texture is wallpaper applied to a old recycled wood dresser, the textured wallpaper is then painted to look antique, project details in the Paint Anything magazine.  Sooo yeah, that happened.  Aside from living trees I do love things made from wood.  And I love books. And I love collage, so lets get back to that.

I always start out with more images and words than would ever fit onto one 8 x 8 collage!

I have fun moving the images and words around and playing with layering ideas!

Collage with wood dresser with faux texture, a woman saying "read any good books lately" and a stack of books along the left side. With a vertical swatch of green yarn along the right edge.

And eventually I settle on a layout and glue it all down.  When it was finished I felt good about it and enjoyed the mixture of colors and textures.  As well as the good amount of white space.  That I could journal in if I want to.  There is no law that says you have to fill every inch of your collage space.  White space is completely acceptable!!  Oh and hey guess what?!   I can call the entire journal an Art Journal.  Art Journaling is simply the merging of art and words.

Just as I was trying to get this post written, my inner critic decided she wanted to weight in on things.  Honestly this collage didn't need any more mental gymnastics.  Here is the truth there is a good amount of non fussy fussy-cutting. That is intentional.  I know how to do precise fussy cutting and how to hide cutting errors.  However, its week 3!  We are not covering those things in Week 3!  There is a tentative schedule, and the tentative schedule says we are covering intermediate techniques in the weeks to come.
A pile of collage supplies with magazines, paint, yarn, cardboard and more.

In the meantime, relax.  Its just paper and glue.  Enjoy the process and have fun!
Till next week!

Always in color!
