COMFORT.  Hmm, I was way outside of my comfort zone with this one.  It was fun to just play with recycled material and mix paint colors that I never would have thought to mix.  I think the comforting part was not being attached to the materials or the outcome.  Not being anxious about 'ruining or wasting' expensive supplies.  Even though I know and preach that learning is never a waste, I'm not immune to thinking it.

So here's the bare bones of how the process goes.  Start by gathering a variety of surfaces and things that you can glue to surfaces to make subtle texture.  After gluing things to make subtle texture , paint everything white.  Next pick a one or two neutral colors and paint everything in those neutral colors.  Next, combine the pieces into a collage.  If you'd like 4+ hours of detailed videos and a wide variety of ways to add subtle texture take the Textural Minimalism class with Stephanie Lee. It is hosted on the JeanneOliver.com, so don't let that confuse you.  You can also visit Stephanie Lee's site and see all the classes and other things she offers there.

The paint colors I mixed to get this grungy aged look were Lukas Cryl Liquid Acrylic in Gold Ochre.  And Soho Urban Artist Heavy Body Acrylic in Neutral Gray.  Soho is a house brand for Jerry's Artarama.  These two colors can be found in most acrylic brands, so feel free to use your favorite or easy to access brand.    Any shades of sienna, umber, ochre, gray would work.  Black is too dark, but you can add white to get gray.  Tear up a cardboard box and have fun discovering your favorite grungy neutrals!!!
